Which is the best city to visit to see the “Old South”?
I’ve never been south of DC here on the East Coast, and I’d love to see a different part of the country. The place I’m looking for should be heavy in history and culture more than beaches and resorts. I’d also really like a place where I don’t need a car to see the sights. Right now I’m considering places like Charleston, SC and Savannah, GA. Anyone have any personal favorites, other suggestions or a vote for one of those two? St. Augustine, FL is also on my “possible someday” list, although since their airport is no longer commercially serviced getting to and from is really difficult. Thanks for your help!
Can’t get any more history than Charleston. Savannah doesn’t compare at all. Not much in St Augustine either. Both are ok to visit, but for a several day visit, Charleston is the place to go. Most historic city in the south in my opinion and the most beautiful besides. I don’t like cities at all, but Charleston is one place I would go back to.
