West Virginia is a state in the Appalachian Mountains. West Virginia separated from the Commonwealth of Virginia during the American Civil War (1861-1865), and was admitted the Union as the 35th State 20 June 1865.

Because of the state mountaineous terrain, only a limited amount of farming in the state did. West Virginia main Industry is coal mining. Some oil and gas extraction is carried out in the state, but only small to medium sized fields have been found so far.
